New Year's Eve in São Paulo — The Réveillon Guide

Rio gets the beach postcards, but São Paulo throws one of the biggest street NYE parties in the world: Réveillon na Paulista — Paulista Avenue closed to cars, free concerts on giant stages, and around 2 million people counting down under confetti between the skyscrapers. Here's how to do December 31st in SP properly.

Option 1 — Réveillon na Paulista (free, massive)

The city's flagship celebration: stages along Paulista Avenue with major Brazilian artists, starting early evening and running past midnight fireworks. It's free, it's enormous, and it's authentically paulistano.

Survival notes:

  • Arrive by 8–9 PM if you want anywhere near a stage; the avenue fills completely
  • Metro is the only sane transport — stations near Paulista run special schedules, and streets close for blocks around
  • White clothing is the Brazilian NYE tradition (peace for the new year) — join in
  • Same crowd rules as Carnival: phone zipped, small cash, water (safety guide)
  • It's summer: expect 25°C+ at midnight, and pack a poncho — December is rainy season (weather by month)

Option 2 — Rooftops, clubs and dinners

  • Rooftop parties: hotel rooftops and sky bars sell NYE packages (R$300–1.500+ with open bar) with fireworks views over the skyline — book from November
  • Restaurant réveillon: SP's great restaurants do fixed-price NYE dinners (R$400–1.200); the Jardins and Itaim houses fill first
  • Clubs: electronic and LGBTQ+ circuits run sunrise parties — see the nightlife guide for the areas

Where to stay for NYE

The winning move is sleeping walkable to Paulista — transport at 1 AM on January 1st is the night's only real problem:

The NYE week bonus

The week between Christmas and NYE is São Paulo at its emptiest and most pleasant — locals leave for the beach, traffic evaporates, restaurants take walk-ins. It's secretly one of the best weeks of the year to visit: museums without lines and summer evenings in open-air bars. Fill the days with the 3-day itinerary or a day trip to the coast.

São Paulo vs Rio for NYE?

Copacabana's fireworks are iconic — and come with 3x hotel prices, minimum-stay requirements and epic logistics. SP's version is free, walkable and un-touristy. The combo play: NYE in SP, fly to Rio January 2nd when Rio prices collapse. SP vs Rio compared →
