The e-visa for US, Canadian and Australian citizens
Brazil reinstated visa requirements for these three nationalities in April 2025. The good news: it's an electronic visa — no consulate visit.
- Apply online through the official partner portal (search "Brazil e-visa VFS" — apply only via the official site, third-party "expediters" charge double)
- Upload passport photo page, a photo, and proof of funds/return ticket
- Pay the fee (~US$80) and wait — typically 5 business days, but apply at least 2–4 weeks before travel
- Print a copy and save the PDF on your phone
The e-visa is valid for multiple entries. Overstaying incurs a daily fine and problems on your next visit — don't.
What immigration actually asks for
At GRU passport control, have ready:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Return or onward ticket (they do ask, especially for long stays)
- Address of your first accommodation — booking confirmation on your phone is fine
- Proof of funds is rarely requested but a credit card counts
No yellow fever vaccine is required for São Paulo arrivals from most countries, but it's recommended if you'll continue to the Amazon or Iguaçu region.
Staying longer than 90 days
Tourists from visa-free countries can usually extend once for another 90 days (180 total per year) at the Polícia Federal — book the appointment online before your first 90 days expire, bring proof of funds and pay a small fee.
