São Paulo doesn't market itself as a family destination, which is exactly why it works: attractions are world-class, crowds are local, and everything is cheaper than the equivalent in the US or Europe. Here's what actually works with children.

The big five for kids

1. Catavento Science Museum (Centro) — hands-on science in a gorgeous 1920s palace; regularly rated among the best children's museums in Latin America. Plan a half day.
2. Aquário de São Paulo (Ipiranga) — Latin America's largest aquarium, with everything from sharks to a polar bear section. Weekday mornings are blissfully empty.
3. Ibirapuera Park — playgrounds, bike rental (with kid seats), lake turtles, and space to burn energy. Sundays add street performers and food carts.
4. Zoológico de São Paulo — one of the world's larger zoos, set inside Atlantic forest. Combine with the botanical garden next door.
5. Football match experience — kids from football families will never forget a game at Allianz Parque or Morumbi. Go with a hosted experience rather than solo — book on Viator.

Rainy-day arsenal
