Flying — the default answer
The ponte aérea (air shuttle) runs dozens of daily flights. The trick is choosing airports:
- Fly CGH (Congonhas) → SDU (Santos Dumont): city airport to city airport. CGH is inside São Paulo (now metro-connected via Line 17), and SDU delivers you a 15-minute cab from Copacabana with a landing view of Sugarloaf that beats any tour
- GRU → GIG (the big internationals) is the cheap-fare pair but adds 1h+ of transfer on each end
- Book 2–4 weeks out for R$150–250 fares; same-day can hit R$800
- Morning flights dodge the afternoon thunderstorm delays (Nov–Mar)
The bus — Brazil's underrated luxury
Brazilian long-haul buses embarrass European and US equivalents: the leito (bed) class has seats reclining nearly flat, and executivo costs less than lunch. Overnight departures (~23h from Tietê terminal, arriving ~6h in Rio) turn travel into hotel savings.
- Buy on the bus companies' apps/sites or aggregators a few days ahead
- Tietê bus terminal connects directly to metro Line 1
- Bring a jacket — Brazilian bus AC has two settings: off and Antarctic
Driving — only for the coastal route
The inland Dutra highway is efficient and dull. The reason to drive is the Rio-Santos (BR-101) coastal road: Ubatuba's beaches, colonial Paraty (UNESCO-listed, worth an overnight), and Ilha Grande's ferry — one of South America's great road trips if you give it 2–3 days.
